Chara design sheet

That may be my first character design sheet ever.
I was really unhappy with the hunter introduced in chapter 6. He was not like what I had in mind at all (an veteran task force type of guy).
So in the middle of chapter 7 I decided to redo it from scratch. Chapter 6 will be replaced by a new chapter 6.2.
I’ve layered every piece of cloth so I can combine, swap etc…
Let me know what you think of that one.

WASTE chapter 5 contact

Hey there !
Chapter 5’s inking first pass is done. So here is a contact of all the pages ! And yest last one is a double page….(didn’t do that since chapter 1 Ended, as it was a pain in every way)
Basically, All characters have been inked. Second pass will be backgrounds, dialogs….(yeah once again I left it last………sorry).
I hope to be done very soon !

Benching Krita for artwork

I have lined and hatched  those images in an open source program called Krita.
Recently I’ve been trying out Krita. Why ? I don’t remember. But it just happens manga studio is being nasty and you already know I am not at ease with Photoshop when it comes to drawing line art.

So I’ve dived in Krita’s brushes’ settings to calibrate my tools and have nice lines like I did in manga studio, which led me to learn a lot about brushes in Krita but also in MS and PS as I was going back and forth to understand why this why that.

Bottom line is Krita is very capable and I love the lines I get. It’s the first time I feel like I’m manipulating my Chinese brush again.
It’s capable enough to make me turn a blind eye on the layer tree which I really don’t get along with and the dozen of crashes I had today with the program. Hopefully there is a very powerful back up system so I lost….0 data.

Chapter 3 early pages

OK so it’s a very late “early” publication but well, that’s me ! I’m trying to post the manga bit by bit. If it happens to be better then I’ll adopt that publication style for a page every 1 or 2 days…

Let me know your opinion. Some people don’t like to get things bit by bit. Some others do like it etc…

A few impact effect tries. Mainly to compare my ability to use a graphire, intuos and Cintiq…Cintiq is the last (and best one in my opinion).

These days I’ve finally been able to get back to WASTE. Chapter 3 is definitely coming out before February 14.

With chapter 3 I decided to go for photoshop as my main and only drawing program. So I’m relearning to make my FX and find the tools I’m comfortable with from scratch again. That certainly is the kind of disadvantage you have over traditional media. It’s frightening to see how much a program can influence you.

I went for photoshop mainly because the unrivaled freedom and possibilities it provides. I can even now reuse Manga Studio and inject it in photoshop in an easy way. But I want to do everything in PS so I don’t have to dance switch between programs.
Photoshop gives lots of freedom but you have to build your own tools from scratch (I’m crafting lots of brushes). However I’m really happy from what I get.

New brushes

The render of this panel was really puzzling me as I didn’t render interiors since…so many years.

I made a first try with soft gradients of gray I posted on my facebook page but neither me nor readers were convinced. So I gave it another try.

The goal was to avoid gradients which are everything but line art (and they also print very bad). So I went for high black and white threshold.
To do so I made my own brushes in photoshop. It really worked really smoothly and I’m pretty happy with the result !

Back to work

2013_10_20_waste_c3_teaser_800

Today I began inking WASTE chapter 3. I have been pretty busy the past couple of months. I wasn’t expecting it and it’s far from finished…It’s funny how there’s always something in my way when it comes to manga.

However, today I put everything aside to begin inking chapter 3. This is the very first panel which is the most difficult, unusual and time consuming task when I begin inking a chapter…so I need to be mentally prepared before I do it, and to be honest, I can kill more time turning around the task than doing it…

The good thing is, when this is done, then all the rest comes by itself. It even becomes difficult to me to stop. So I believe I can finish this chapter before December…

However, I’m still taken by a lot of projects at the same time and I can’t garante anything. I’m sorry for those who wait for me and support my work. Hopefully I can soon dedicate myself more to manga.
