I was thinking about that digital painting stuff during lunch break today but there is no graphic tablet in my agency, so I tried to simulate it with a pencil by drawing very quick shapes not finishing anything.
Then I remembered I got that Pentel GFKP in my pocket for times like this…the whole process took something like 20 minutes. And I’m pretty happy with it.
It’s a line drawing of course, but I my approach was influenced by the digital painting experience I had yesterday…
I tried to give a sense to this creature, further than “it is a monster ! it has to be ugly !”.
So I imagined that it was a flying helium filled creature that would float (like starcraft’s overloards for example). Then I gave it those spiderlike eyes and those tongs as if it hunted birds like chameleon hunts insects…but I wanted it to be fast, like it could be a fierce hunter or a useful mount…so I tried to suggest some flie’s wings but the drawing was nearly done and I couldn’t erase it 🙂
Now you know why I called it Heliumite !
I’m submitting my senior project in the end of April and I’m kinda…late. From now on and until the end of April, I don’t think I’ll have time to do anything related to manga…
I’ve submitted my senior project now so before preparing the oral exam etc etc…I thought I’d have a little fun.
I’m trying to get into digital painting since now I’m on tablet.
I must say it’s very confusing to me as I never worked without strong line presence…But I think it will get better and better with time.
I’d like to doodle one every couple of days to get into it…so maybe I can inject it in WASTE for backgrounds and color covers etc…
What do you think ?
Chapter 2 is released ! read it here !
That’s typically not the time I should have been working on it (senior project deadline = April 26….and the new website is not ready).
However, like a baby, it came at the moment it was ready ! Expected or not !
I hope you’ll like it at least as much as chapter 1 !
I’ll be posting more making of videos on youtube little by little !
See you soon to talk about chapter 3 and new production techniques
Chapter 2 should be released in less than 24 hours…I’m upping some time lapses I recorded while drawing the characters.
This takes lots of time, especially when you have lots of records…so if you want to see some specific content in priority, shoot me an email via the contact page !
Hope you’ll enjoy chapter 2 !
This was a bit…unexpected.
At the peak of pressure and stress about my senior project, I get to polish chapter 2 for release…
The new website is on hold…
Nothing is going as planned but things are going on.
I got to submit my senior project soon…so obviously it’s time for me to do anything but to work on it!
I was initially working (hard) on the new manga tengu website. But as you certainly don’t know yet, I’m lunatic.
I take projects (I see them as problems that need to be solved) and work on them until I’m satisfied.
Today I woke up with the urge to solve a specific problem : Now that I have a cintiq (graphic tablet), how will I draw orthographic stuff without feeling constrained ?…Shouldn’t I rely exclusively on photomanipulation ? Ah but no I need to be able to draw anything…blablabla…
So I worked all day trying everything passing through my mind and as everytime, I ended up with a mix of all the methods I explored.
I know manga studio’s rulers look awesome. But when you use autocad everyday (or know how to use a normal plastic ruler 🙂 ) at work…it really doesn’t look that great. I quickly felt bounded and unable to move freely. So I worked on gaining freedom and flexibility…
Now I’m certain I go faster than by hand and I’m pretty happy with the result. However I hope to improve my workflow. Maybe use 3D models. to make certain things, set up good brushes etc…
Now that I “solved” that “problem” and finished page 1. The others should follow soon if my senior project doesn’t take too much time.
A little word to say I’m not dead 🙂
I’m developing my new website with Symfony. for those who know about programming they won’t wonder it’s taking some time since I’m new to OOP and frameworks.
However, things are progressing and I keep hope of getting the basic site released soon (a site with categories and a correct reader).
Then I hope to implement extras for each page where people can see my drafts and video records etc…
I also intend to add multilingual display, like and g+ stuff…
Lots of things. However I’ll be covering the basic stuff as quick as possible, then the rest will come while I draw WASTE, which I completely abandoned in dust those past 2 months…I hope readers understand !
I’ve been talking about a new version of the site since I’ve finished this one. The two weeks I thought it would take are transforming into 2+ months…
Chapter 2 was supposed to be finished by now, but I had a setback…and I’m not working on WASTE these days because of coding.
I know my main activity (aside from work……….) is supposed to be manga. But I really need a robust website and I’ve had enough of half done solutions. So I put manga on pause since a while now and until I have the website I desire.
Good thing in the end is that before I was talking about learning OOP and Symfony as if I might fail (Originally I’m no developper (but I kinda became one), this is complicated stuff for common people like me). However Now I’m nearly done, so things are much more certain than before.
The new version of the website will certainly come in 2 parts :
-In February would come a new php website with all the functionalities a website should provide
-In Marsh/April would come some cool appearance, a new manga reader and all the cool stuff…
However, I think as soon as the first part is launched, I’ll part time between manga and coding to limit the huge damage I’m doing to my schedule 😡
Two main news :-Chapter 2 is comming soon
-New video stuffYeah it is coming…chapter 2 !!!
I’m ashamed to say that even if I took 6 other months to get it out…it’s only 21 pages !
As a matter of fact I made the deepest changes in my working tools choice and experimented a lot before going for chapter 2. It will be my first fully digital release. Also I have to admit I lost lots of time lazing around with the story board….
By the way in January it will have been 1 year I begun working on WASTE.
About video stuff, well since I went for digital media, it has become way easier to take higher quality and clearer videos…so I filmed myself while drawing 14 of the chapter 2 pages. I’ll be putting all this on youtube (my name on youtube is MangaTengu). I expect from now on to film each and every page…that will be fun.
I’m actually working a bit on the main script of WASTE to give it some consistency…trying a funny method to try and get complex plots without getting lost.
